In addition to 911 you should also be aware of the non-emergency phone number which can be used to dispatch officers for situations which don’t call for red & blue lights. It is 248-1777. You should be aware that with the centralized dispatch program now in use, your call is routed to Volusia County and not our local station house. Nevertheless, the responder will most likely by an Ormond Beach officer, just as in the old days.

If you didn’t make it to the Meet & Greet on the Eve of Poisson d’Avril, you missed an excellent presentation by Officers Cornelius and Stokes of the Ormond Beach Police. Officer Cornelius informed us that he and Officer Stokes both provide a wide range of ancillary services in addition to their beat work. Following is a list of some of those activities:

• Home and business security surveys (Officer Cornelius is a Crime Prevention Practitioner certified by the Attorney General’s Office).
• Officer Cornelius is the liaison for Florida Power & Light, and assists citizens with getting additional streetlights installed (in high crime areas, or dark or unsafe conditions). Note: the city will not install an additional light to illuminate private property.
• Both officers teach citizens about Personal Safety, ID Theft, Fraud, Home Security, Business Security, CCTV (closed circuit TV) Systems, Holiday Safety Tips, Realtor Safety, and Bank Safety (Bank Protection Act). They will attend functions and fingerprint children and offer safety tips to attendees.
• Officer Cornelius is the coordinator for National Night Out.
• Officer Cornelius is the city coordinator for the CPA (Citizens Police Academy) and the CPAAA (Citizens Police Academy Alumni Association).
• Both officers help coordinate Neighborhood Watch Groups.

Officer Cornelius advised me that they are available for other projects related to public safety as the need arises.
